Reading a DOT date code

It is also the marking most often moulded on the side you cannot see, which is why so many people conclude their tires do not have one.

Everything else stamped into a sidewall is a fact about a product line. The size is the same on every tire of that size. The load index, the speed symbol, the treadwear grade, the country of manufacture — all of them are true of thousands of identical units.

The string beginning DOT is different. It is the only marking that changes from one tire to the next coming off the same machine, and it is the only one that can tell you anything about the specific object you are looking at rather than about the catalogue entry it came from.

It is also widely misunderstood, in a specific and consistent way: people treat it as a quality statement. It is not. It is an address.

Why you probably cannot find it

Before anything else, the practical obstacle.

The rules require the complete identification number, including the date, on one sidewall. The other face is permitted to carry a shortened version with the date portion left off. Manufacturers have frequently put the complete code on the inboard face — so on a mounted wheel, the side you can walk up to and read often carries the abbreviated one.

The result is a very common conclusion: my tires don't have a date code. They do. It is pointing at the suspension.

Getting to it means turning the wheel to full lock and looking at the inner sidewall with a torch, or getting under the vehicle, or reading it while the wheel is off for something else. It is a thirty-second job that people skip because the first sidewall they check appears to settle the question.

What the string is actually made of

Read left to right, the identification number is a chain of separate fields that were each added for their own reason:

  • DOT — a compliance statement. The tire's manufacturer is certifying it meets the applicable federal motor vehicle safety standard. It is a declaration, not a test result, and it appears on every tire sold into the market regardless of quality.
  • The plant code — which factory built it. Older production uses a two-symbol code; a rule change moved newer production to a three-symbol code and a fixed-length number overall, because the original scheme ran out of combinations as global manufacturing expanded.
  • A tire size code — the manufacturer's internal code for the size, which is not the size code you read off the sidewall and is of no use to a consumer.
  • An optional manufacturer's code — elective, up to a few characters, used by the maker for its own purposes. Frequently absent entirely, which is one reason these strings vary in length.
  • The date code — the last group, and the only part most people ever want.

The middle fields exist for recall administration. If a batch has to be recalled, the recall is published against plant and date, and this string is how a tire is matched to it. That is the purpose the whole system was built for; everything else you use it for is a side effect.

The last four digits

Four digits: two for the week, two for the year.

2219 means the twenty-second week of 2019, which is late May. 0525 is the fifth week of 2025, so early February. Weeks run from 01 to 53, counted from the start of the calendar year, and the code records when the tire was cured — when it came out of the mould as a finished object.

That is the whole decode. There is no month, no day, no batch letter to interpret.

Codes from before 2000

Older tires use three digits rather than four, and the difference is not cosmetic.

The first two are still the week; the last single digit is the last digit of the year. So 178 means the seventeenth week of a year ending in 8, and the notation itself cannot tell you which decade. During the 1990s a small triangle was moulded after the code to indicate that decade, which helps if it is there and does not if the tire predates the practice.

The reason the four-digit form exists is that the three-digit one assumed no tire would still be in service a decade later. Encountering one now — on a trailer, a spare, a stored vehicle — is exactly the case the original scheme could not express.

What the date is not

Three misreadings, in descending order of how often they happen.

It is not the date of sale. Tires are manufactured to forecast and warehoused. A tire fitted the week you bought it may have been built a year or two earlier, and the retailer has no obligation to volunteer that. Checking the code before the tire goes on the wheel is the only moment you can easily act on it.

It is not the date of fitting. On a used vehicle, the date code tells you when the tire was made, not when it was bolted on, and the two can be years apart in either direction.

It is not an expiry date. Nothing about the marking encodes a service life. It is a timestamp. Everything else people read into it is interpretation layered on top.

What it is genuinely useful for

  • Recall matching. The purpose it exists for, and the one case where the plant and size fields matter too.
  • Auditing a "new" tire. How long a tire has sat in a warehouse before reaching you is information you can have for free, at the moment it is still easy to decline.
  • Spotting a set that is not a set. Four tires from four adjacent weeks were bought together. Four tires from four different years were assembled from whatever was on the rack, and that is worth knowing about a used vehicle regardless of what conclusion you draw from it.
  • Finding the forgotten one. The spare is very often the oldest tire on the vehicle by a wide margin, because it was fitted at the factory and nobody has looked at it since.
  • Dating a vehicle's history. Tires are a rough clock. A car advertised as low-mileage on its third set of tires is telling you something the odometer is not.

On age itself, honestly

This is where a lot of writing about date codes overreaches, so here is the position plainly.

Vehicle manufacturers publish differing guidance on tire age — some state six years from manufacture, others ten, and some decline to state a figure. Tire industry bodies generally hold that no single number applies universally, because how a tire ages depends on heat, sunlight, ozone, load, inflation history and storage as much as on elapsed time. A tire kept inflated in a temperate garage and a tire mounted on a trailer parked in the sun age at genuinely different rates.

This site computes geometry. It does not adjudicate between those sources, and it is not going to tell you when a tire is finished. What the date code gives you is the input to that question — the one fact that is otherwise unknowable — and where to take it is between you, your vehicle's handbook and someone who can physically inspect the tire.

The four-second habit

Next time a wheel is off for any reason, turn it over and read the inner sidewall. Note the four digits. That is it.
