Will 33s fit? What the question really means
The arithmetic part takes thirty seconds. The rest of it is not arithmetic at all, and pretending otherwise is how people end up with a rubbing tire.
Somebody types "will 33s fit my Tacoma" into a search box roughly every few seconds, and every result they get answers a different question. That is not because the internet is unhelpful. It is because the question contains four questions, only one of which has a single correct answer.
Pulling them apart is the most useful thing anyone can do with it.
Question one: what is a 33, exactly?
This one is arithmetic, and it has a precise answer that is more annoying than people expect: a "33" is not a size, it is a category, and the tires inside it are not the same height.
33x12.50R17 measures 33.00 in, because imperial notation prints the diameter directly.
285/70R17, the metric size almost universally described as a 33, measures 32.71 in — 0.29 in
shorter. Both are sold as 33s, sit next to each other on the same shelf, and cost about the same.
That 0.29 in is trivial for a speedometer and is occasionally the difference between clearing an inner fender and not. Which is a good preview of the rest of this article.
Question two: what changes if I fit one?
Also arithmetic, also exact. Take the most common starting point on a modern mid-size or half-ton
pickup, 265/70R17 at 31.61 in, and put a genuine 33 on it.
Overall diameter goes from 31.61 in to 33.00 in: +1.39 in, or 4.41%. Ride height at the axle rises by half that, 0.70 in, because the tire grows at the top and the bottom equally. Section width goes from 10.43 in to 12.50 in: +2.07 in, which is a much bigger relative change than the height and is the one that surprises people standing in front of the truck afterwards.
Revolutions per mile fall from 638.1 to 611.2. The speedometer under-reads by 4.41%, so an indicated 70 mph is an actual 73.1 mph, and an indicated 100 miles is 104.4 real miles. Over a 60,000-mile lease that is around 2,600 miles the odometer never counted.
If you start from 265/65R17 instead — the other very common factory size on a 17-inch wheel, at
30.56 in — everything gets bigger. To 285/70R17 is +2.15 in and 7.02%, and an indicated 70 mph
becomes 74.9 mph.
None of that is opinion. Two size codes go in, those numbers come out, and they are the same numbers regardless of what the tire is bolted to.
Question three: will it physically clear?
Here the arithmetic runs out, and it runs out completely.
Clearance is not a property of the tire. It is a property of the tire, the wheel's offset and backspacing, the suspension's travel, the steering lock, the bump-stop height, the shape of the inner fender liner, whether the vehicle has been lifted, whether the bumper is the factory one, and what the vehicle does at full articulation rather than sitting still in a car park.
Two identical trucks of the same model year can give different answers because one of them has had a wheel spacer fitted. A site that told you "yes, 33s fit" from two numbers would be guessing, and the guess would look authoritative.
What the arithmetic can do for the clearance question is tell you which dimension to worry about. Going from 265/70R17 to 33x12.50R17, the height increase is 0.70 in at the axle and the width increase is 2.07 in — and the width is what finds the inner fender at full lock. People plan for height and get bitten by width, because the name of the size only mentions height.
Question four: will it be all right to drive?
Not arithmetic either, and the components of it are worth separating.
Load rating is a comparison between two documents. Your vehicle's tire and loading information
placard, on the driver's door jamb, states a minimum. The tire's sidewall states what it provides.
The comparison itself is simple; noticing that it needs doing is the hard part. Two tires marked
285/70R17 can differ by hundreds of pounds of capacity depending on whether they carry an LT
prefix and what load range they are built to, because an LT casing is rated at a much higher
inflation pressure.
Gearing is arithmetic again, but it answers a narrower question than people think. Going from 265/70R17 to 35x12.50R17 on a 3.73:1 axle, the ratio that restores the original engine speed is 4.13:1, and 4.10:1 is the nearest set genuinely sold. Going only to a 33 from the same starting point, it is 3.89:1 — and 3.91:1 exists. That is the whole reason 33s are described as needing nothing much and 35s as needing a re-gear: the smaller step lands close to a ratio the vehicle may already have.
Whether re-gearing is worth the money is a judgement about how you drive, not a calculation.
Legality varies by country, state and province, and covers overall height, protrusion beyond the bodywork, and in some places whether the change was inspected at all.
So what should you actually do
Do the arithmetic first, because it is free, exact, and rules things in and out quickly. Know how much taller, how much wider, and how far out the speedometer will be, before anything else.
Then treat clearance as a separate research problem with a completely different method: find owners of your exact platform, with your exact wheel offset, who have already fitted the exact tire, and look at their photographs of the inner fender at full lock. That is genuinely the best available evidence, and no amount of geometry substitutes for it.
Then read your placard, then read the sidewall, then compare the two numbers.
The reason "will 33s fit" gets bad answers is that people try to answer all four questions with one method. The arithmetic questions deserve exact arithmetic. The fitment questions deserve photographs and a tape measure. Mixing them produces confident answers to the wrong question.
And if you take one number away from this, take the width. Everyone plans around 1.39 in of extra height and gets surprised by 2.07 in of extra width, because the size is named after the dimension that matters least.
