Two hundredths of an inch. That is the entire difference in rolling diameter between the wheels on one trim of this car and the wheels on another.

Three variables that cancel

The changes are not small individually:

  • section width up 20 mm, from 8.46 in to 9.25 in
  • aspect ratio down ten points, from 55 to 45
  • wheel diameter up one inch

Sidewall height falls from 4.66 in to 4.16 in — almost exactly the half inch the extra wheel needs. Everything lands where it was meant to.

What the vehicle notices

0.06% of speedometer error, which is to say nothing at all. There is no recalibration, no allowance, and no odometer consequence over any distance a car will cover — six hundredths of a per cent is smaller than the difference a set of tires makes to itself between fitting and replacement.

Why the factory can do this and you often cannot

A manufacturer chooses both sizes at once, to a target, before either wheel is tooled. Someone plus-sizing an existing car chooses the wheel first and then finds the closest tire the market happens to make. The first process produces 0.02 in; the second usually produces something between a tenth and half an inch, which is still fine but is not the same exercise.

The dimension that did change

Width, by 0.79 in, and sidewall, by half an inch. Those are the real differences between the two trims, and both of them affect how the car rides and how much a replacement wheel costs. The plus-sizing reference covers what the exercise is trying to hold constant and why.

Availability is not symmetrical

215/55R17 is a mainstream touring size stocked by almost every manufacturer in almost every category, including winter. 235/45R18 is a shorter and more performance-weighted list. For an owner running two sets of wheels through the year, that asymmetry usually decides which set gets the winter tires, and it has nothing to do with the two hundredths of an inch above.

Rim width, briefly

A 235 section is specified against a wider reference rim than a 215 is — that much is directional and general. What it is not is a claim about the two wheel sets in question, whose widths are not in either size code and are not held on this site. The reason it is worth raising at all is that matching rolling diameters, which these two do to two hundredths of an inch, can make a swap look like a like-for-like exchange when the casings and the wheels underneath them are two separate variables.
