There is no gentle way to describe this one. 5.30 in of diameter and 4.04 in of section width is not a tire change; it is a change of category, and the arithmetic behaves accordingly.

The percentage is the story

19.15%. No other pairing in this comparison set comes close. Most of them can be discussed in tenths of an inch and low single-digit percentages; this one cannot, because a fifth of the original rolling diameter has been added.

What that does to the instruments is not subtle, and the panel above understates the awkwardness by showing round numbers. At a legal 60 on the dial the Jeep is doing 71.5, which is a speed with consequences attached in most jurisdictions.

The odometer is the figure people underestimate, though. Service intervals, fuel economy and warranty mileage are all counted by an instrument now running 19% slow, and unlike the needle — which a driver can learn to correct in their head — that one compounds silently, every mile, for as long as the tires are on.

Where the height comes from

Both tires sit on a 15-inch wheel, so all 5.30 in of the difference is sidewall — 2.65 in of it above the axle and 2.65 in below. The metric tire's sidewall is 6.35 in tall. The flotation tire's is 9.00 in, which is very nearly as much rubber between the rim and the ground as the wheel has radius.

That is a defining property of 15-inch flotation sizes and the reason they persisted for so long after 16s and 17s took over everywhere else. Nothing on a 17-inch wheel gets a 9-inch sidewall without going to a 35, and a 35 will not fit under a stock TJ.

The width nobody budgets for

Four inches of extra casing, 8.46 in against 12.50 in. That is 47.67% more section width — the casing is nearly half again as wide — and on a vehicle that left the factory with a 6-inch-wide wheel and a narrow track, it is the dimension that finds trouble first. Steering stops, control arms, sway-bar links and the inner fender all live closer to the tire than the fender lip does.

The height gets the attention because the height is in the name.

What the gearing arithmetic says

A TJ with 3.73 gears would need 4.44:1 to put the engine back where it was at a given road speed; the nearest set anybody actually sells is 4.56:1. From 4.10 the arithmetic asks for 4.89:1, and 4.88:1 exists. Those are computed equivalences, not advice — but they show why this particular jump and the phrase "you'll need to re-gear" became attached to each other in Jeep conversation. It is not folklore. It is a fifth of the final drive.

The rim underneath both of them

The size codes name a 15-inch wheel and stop there. Width is the wheel's other dimension, it is absent from 215/75R15, from 33x12.50R15 and from this site's data, and on a jump of this size it does more to the measured result than anything else left over. Mount 12.50 in of casing narrower than the rim it was quoted against and the tread edges pull inward and the crown rounds: the tire measures under its nominal width and stands marginally taller. The same tire on a wider wheel squats back toward 12.50 in. Two owners can report different measured heights for identical tires for no reason other than the wheels underneath, which is why the width stamped on the wheel is worth reading before comparing notes. The intermediate rung

Most TJs did not do this in one move. The 31x10.50R15 sits between the two at 31.00 in, and the smaller step is the one that happened first for a great many of them. Comparing the two steps is more informative than comparing either to the stock size, because it shows how unevenly the flotation ladder is spaced at the bottom.

Nothing here is a fitment finding

Everything above is derived from two size codes. Whether 12.50 in of casing turns lock to lock inside a particular TJ's fenders depends on the wheel's backspacing, the suspension, the steering stops and what has already been changed — none of which is knowable from a tire size. Measure it on the vehicle, at full lock and at full droop, with the weight on the tires.
