The Sport trim leaves the factory on the smallest tire in the range and a very large number of them do not stay that way. This page is the arithmetic of the jump people make, and it is a bigger jump than the two numbers suggest.
It is not one step, it is two
The 17-inch ladder on a Wrangler has an obvious middle rung — a 33, in either notation — and this pairing steps straight over it. From 31.47 in to 35.00 in is 3.53 in, which is more than double the gap that separates most adjacent sizes anywhere else in the catalogue.
Split it and the picture is clearer. Stock to a 33 is roughly the first half; 33 to 35 is the second. Doing both at once means every consequence arrives at once too, which is why the change is usually discussed as a project rather than as a set of tires.
The number the instruments see
11.22%, and the important word is per cent: the error is a proportion, not a fixed offset, so the gap between needle and road more than doubles in miles per hour between town speeds and a motorway cruise. Testing a swap around a car park will therefore understate it by exactly the ratio of the two speeds.
That is large enough to change the meaning of every trip-computer figure the vehicle reports. Fuel economy in particular is calculated from distance the odometer believes it has covered, so it reads roughly a tenth low from the moment the tires go on.
Width is the larger proportional change
Section width goes from 9.65 in to 12.50 in: 2.85 in, or 29.59% more casing. That is a bigger proportional change than the height, and it is the half of the change this site can quantify least usefully, because a 12.50 in figure is a nominal one taken on a reference rim. Put the same casing on a narrower wheel and the shoulders pull inward: a tape then reads under 12.50 in across and a shade over 35.00 in tall. What the gearing arithmetic returns
A JL Sport with 3.73:1 axles would need 4.15:1 to hold the original engine speed at a given road speed; the nearest ratio anyone sells is 4.10:1, which lands slightly short. From 3.45:1 or from 4.10:1 the answers are different again, and the gear ratio calculator will take whatever is actually in your axles.
None of that is a recommendation. It is a conversion — one axle ratio expressed in terms of another, given a change in rolling diameter — and it is a fact about numbers rather than a statement about any particular Jeep.
The sidewall grows by a quarter
A quarter more rubber between rim and road, 7.23 in against 9.00 in. On a 17-inch wheel that is close to the practical maximum for a flotation tire that still fits under an unmodified body, and it is the reason 35x12.50R17 is the size that 17-inch Wrangler conversations converge on rather than 35x12.50R18 or a taller metric equivalent.
Why the factory size is so narrow
245/75R17 is an odd-looking specification next to everything else on a 17-inch wheel: it reaches 31.47 in on only 9.65 in of section width, using a tall 75-series sidewall to do it. That is a deliberate choice — a tall, narrow casing clears easily, weighs little, and keeps the rolling diameter close to the wider sizes the same platform is also sold with. It is the least demanding tire in the range, and the reason a step away from it feels larger than the diameter figure alone suggests.
The intermediate step, for comparison
If you want the halved version of everything above, 245/75R17 against 33x12.50R17 is the same starting point with the middle rung as the destination — 1.53 in instead of 3.53 in, and a speedometer error under 5%. Reading the two pages together shows how unevenly the consequences scale.
What the geometry does not decide
Everything a Wrangler owner actually argues about: whether the spare carrier takes the weight, whether the tire clears the front bumper at full stuff, and what the axle can be asked to hold.
