This is the cleanest result in the entire comparison set. The two tires are the same height. Not approximately the same height — the same height, to a hundredth of an inch, with the same section width, turning the same number of revolutions per mile.
What is actually different
One thing: 0.50 in of sidewall. The 19-inch fitment carries 6.53 in of rubber between rim and road; the 18-inch fitment carries 7.03 in. The wheel absorbs the difference exactly, because 5 points of aspect ratio on a 255 mm casing is worth almost precisely half an inch, and half an inch top and bottom is the one inch of wheel diameter that separates an 18 from a 19.
That is not an accident. It is the whole reason both sizes exist on the same vehicle.
Why a manufacturer bothers
A vehicle with air suspension, terrain modes, electronic braking distribution and a torque-vectoring differential is calibrated around a known rolling radius. Change it and every one of those systems is now working from a wheel-speed signal that no longer means what the calibration assumes. Offering a 19-inch wheel and an 18-inch wheel on the same model is only possible if both end up rolling identically, so the tire sizes are chosen to make that true before anything else about them is considered.
Aftermarket plus-sizing tries to reproduce this and usually lands within a percent or so. Factory plus-sizing lands on it, because the tire size is selected to a target rather than picked from what is in stock.
Plus-sizing in reverse
Most people meet this problem going up: bigger wheel, shorter sidewall, hold the diameter. The Defender question is usually the other way round — an owner with the 19-inch wheels wants the 18-inch ones for the extra sidewall, and wants to know what it costs.
Geometrically, nothing. The two printed diameters differ in the second decimal place only because each is rounded independently; subtract before rounding and the gap is 0.00 in. Width is identical to 0.00 in as well, speedometer error is 0.01%, and a revolutions-per-mile figure that agrees to a tenth. There is no recalibration to do and no allowance to make, which is unusual enough on this site to be worth saying plainly.
What the extra half inch of sidewall buys
More deflection before the rim is exposed to an impact, and more sidewall to work with when tire pressure is dropped for soft ground. Neither of those is measurable from a size code, and neither is a fitment verdict — they are the reasons the smaller wheel is asked about, not a claim about how either performs.
The 19-inch wheel is the heavier of the two in almost every design, and the tire around it is the lighter. Which combination weighs less overall depends on the specific wheels, and no size code will tell you.
Where it stops being free
Brake clearance runs the other way: a smaller wheel has to fit over the same caliper, and 18-inch wheels are not universally compatible with vehicles delivered on 19s or 20s. That is a hard mechanical constraint and it is entirely outside the arithmetic on this page. Check the wheel, not the tire.
The conservative step from here
If the question is not the wheel but the tire, the Defender's other common comparison is 255/70R18 against 265/70R18 — 10 mm wider on the same wheel, which unlike this pairing does move the diameter, by 0.55 in.
The winter argument for the smaller wheel
A second set of wheels for winter is where this pairing is most often decided, and the 18 wins it on cost rather than on geometry: an 18-inch wheel and the taller-sidewall tire around it are usually cheaper than the 19-inch equivalent, and the tire is the less exposed of the two to kerb damage. The rolling circumference is 100.7 in either way, so a vehicle can run one set in summer and the other in winter with no adjustment at all.
Two identical numbers, two different tires
It is worth ending on the thing the table cannot express. Everything measurable about these two sizes matches, and they are still not interchangeable in any practical sense, because a wheel and tire assembly is bought as a unit and the wheel is where the money, the weight and the brake clearance live. The arithmetic having nothing to say is itself the finding here — the decision is made entirely on grounds this site does not measure.
