The same aspect step is worth different amounts on different tires. On a 285 mm casing it is worth more than on almost anything else in common circulation, and this pairing measures exactly how much.

The step, priced

0.56 in of extra sidewall per side, and 1.12 in of diameter once it is counted above and below the wheel — 31.46 in becoming 32.59 in.

Set that against the same nominal step on narrower casings. Five points on a 265 is worth 1.04 in, on a 245 about 0.96 in, and on a 225 about 0.89 in. The instruction in the code is word-for-word identical in all four cases; the result scales with the width it is applied to, which is why a single character in a size code is worth a quarter more on this tire than on a small crossover's.

Nothing else moves

Section width is 11.22 in on both sides, because 285 mm is 285 mm whatever follows it. The instruction that changes is vertical only, so all 1.12 in of extra diameter is spent above and below the wheel: half of it lifting the axle, half of it filling the space over the crown. Nothing in the code change asks for a millimetre more room beside the tire.

Nominal is the operative word. What a casing measures across depends on the width of the wheel it is fitted to — roughly 0.2 in per half inch of rim, in either direction — and that applies identically to both sides here, which is precisely why it cancels out of the comparison rather than deciding it.

The one thing that does move is the cluster: 3.57%, which is 62.1 mph where the dial says 60. For a change that asks the vehicle for no extra space in any direction, that is a surprisingly large number, and it is the whole cost of the step.

Why a heavy body-on-frame SUV cares

Because on a vehicle of this weight the sidewall carries a great deal of load, and half an inch more of it changes how the tire behaves at reduced pressure and over sharp impacts. Ride height is a secondary consideration; sidewall is the resource.

The 65-series size is also more widely available in LT construction and in the higher load ratings a vehicle this heavy needs, which is often the deciding factor rather than the geometry.

The name it crosses into

31.46 in rounds to 31.5; 32.59 in rounds to 32.5. Neither is a 33, and neither is usually called one — which is worth noting because the 65-series size is frequently listed alongside genuine 33s on fitment charts on the strength of its width rather than its height.

The alternative direction

Adding width instead of profile is the other lever. Doing both at once, as on 275/60R20 against 285/65R20, compounds them — and the difference between compounding and isolating the two variables is the most useful thing to take from a page like this one.
