On a 16-inch wheel, the argument about whether a metric size is "really a 33" almost resolves itself. These two tires are 0.17 in apart.

Two sidewalls, eight hundredths of an inch between them

8.42 in on the metric size, 8.50 in on the flotation size. That is what makes this pairing unusual: the two casings are not merely close in overall height, they are close in the dimension that produces the height. 285 mm at 75% comes to 8.42 in of sidewall; a 33 on a 16-inch wheel needs 8.50 in by definition. The metric size arrives at almost the same place by a completely different route.

Why sixteen-inch wheels persist

Steel. This pairing lives on trucks that are still running the wheels they were sold with — pickups, utility bodies, older SUVs — where a set of 16-inch steels can be replaced for a fraction of what alloys cost, and where the 33-inch class is the top of the range that is stocked in any variety on a wheel this small. Whether a given one clears a given truck is a measurement, not an inference.

The 16-inch wheel also has a specific geometric advantage that is easy to overlook: it leaves room for a very tall sidewall. Both tires here carry over eight inches of it. Neither the 17-inch nor the 20-inch version of a "33" comes anywhere near that, and the pairing is more forgiving of bad surfaces as a direct result of the wheel being small.

The rim width question decides more than the size codes do

Take one 16-inch wheel and put each of these on it in turn. The flotation casing is 12.50 in nominal and the metric one 11.22 in, and a wider casing is specified against a wider measuring rim, so the same wheel sits at a different point in each tire's own approved range — where those ranges fall is on the manufacturer's data sheet for the specific tire and is nowhere in a size code. Fit either narrower than its own specification and its shoulders come inboard — the width figure falls, the height figure rises, and neither matches the code any more.

That asymmetry is why two people can measure the same pair of tires and disagree, and it is a bigger source of variation on this pairing than the 0.17 in the size codes predict.

Where the flotation size is genuinely ahead

Availability of aggressive tread. Mud-terrain and hybrid patterns are far more likely to be offered in 33x12.50R16 than in 285/75R16, and the metric size skews toward all-terrain and highway compounds. On a pairing this geometrically close, tread choice is doing most of the deciding, and that is worth naming because it is often argued about as though it were a question of size.

The same question one wheel up

The 17-inch version of this comparison is not as tidy — 285/70R17 against 33x12.50R17 opens a wider height gap and a wider width gap at once, and the metric size there is a 70-series rather than a 75. The 16-inch pair is the closer match of the two, which is not what most people assume.

What has to be measured on the truck

Whether 1.28 in of extra section width clears at full lock, and what load index each specific tire carries. The LT prefix appears on some examples of each size and not on others, and the load index spans a broad range in both, so two tires bearing the same code can be hundreds of pounds apart in capacity. The placard in the door jamb states the minimum the vehicle needs, and nothing on this page affects it.
