Aspect ratio, and why the same number means different things

A 70-series tire is not a tall tire. It is a tire whose sidewall is 70% of whatever its section width happens to be — and those are very different objects on a 195 and on a 315.

Almost every dimension printed on a tire is an absolute measurement. Aspect ratio is not. It is a proportion, and it only produces a length once you multiply it by the section width sitting to its left in the size code.

That single property is the source of nearly every miscalculation people make with tire sizes.

The multiplication, in the two units it lands in

Sidewall height in millimetres is the section width times the ratio, divided by 100. Divide by 25.4 for inches. Do it twice — once for the sidewall above the wheel, once for the sidewall below — and add the wheel diameter, and you have the overall height.

Worth noticing what the formula does not contain: the wheel. A 45-series sidewall on a 17-inch wheel and a 45-series sidewall on a 20-inch wheel are the same height if the section widths match. Wheel diameter adds to the total; it never scales the sidewall.

Same ratio, two and a half inches apart

Take two 70-series tires on the same 17-inch wheel. 225/70R17 carries a sidewall of 6.20 in. 315/70R17 carries 8.68 in. Both are "70-series". The taller one is taller because it is wider, and for no other reason.

This is why the phrase "a 70-series tire" carries almost no information on its own, and why comparing two sizes by their middle numbers alone gets you nowhere unless the first numbers also match.

A ladder on one width

Hold the width and the wheel fixed and walk the ratio up in five-point steps. Every figure below is computed from the code, nothing is looked up:

Each five-point step adds about 0.44 in of sidewall and roughly 0.89 in of diameter, because the sidewall is counted twice. Across the whole ladder, 45 to 55 is +1.77 in of height — a 7.09% change, which is more than enough to move a speedometer reading and to change what fits under an arch.

The steps are equal here only because the width is constant. Repeat the exercise on a 275 and every step is larger; on a 175, smaller.

Why the numbers fell

Series numbers have been drifting downward for four decades. A 1970s family sedan on 78-series tires, a 1990s one on 65s, a current one on 45s or 40s: the wheels grew, the sidewalls shrank, and overall diameter stayed roughly where the drivetrain needed it. Bigger brake packages, stiffer sidewalls for steering response, and the appearance of a large wheel all pushed the same direction.

The arithmetic consequence is that a modern low-profile tire has very little rubber between the rim flange and the road. A 40-series 245 has 3.86 in of sidewall; a 75-series 245 has 7.23 in. That is not a judgement about either — it is the reason they behave nothing alike over a pothole, and the reason wheel damage is a different proposition on each.

The tall survivors

At the other end, high-series sizes persist where load and traction matter more than steering feel. 235/85R16 — an 85-series — is still fitted to heavy-duty vans and is popular on narrow-track builds, at 31.73 in tall on a 9.25 in section. It reaches the height of a much wider tire on a fraction of the width, which is exactly the property that keeps it in production.

Light-truck sizes cluster at 70 and 75 for the same reason: sidewall height is where a casing gets its ability to deflect over an obstacle without the rim taking the hit.

What a series number will not tell you

  • Tread width. The ratio applies to section width, which includes the sidewall bulge, not the part of the tire touching the road. See section width versus tread width.
  • Load capacity. That is the load index in the service description, and it moves with construction and inflation, not with the aspect ratio.
  • Actual sidewall height on your wheel. Section width is specified at a nominal measuring rim. Mount the same tire wider and the casing spreads, the section grows and the sidewall height falls slightly. Rim width to tire width has the figures.
  • Anything about a flotation size. 35x12.50R17 prints no ratio at all; the size code page shows where it hides.

Using the ratio as a deliberate lever

Because the sidewall is a product of two numbers, there are two ways to reach a given height, and they have different side effects. Widen the tire and the sidewall grows with it, so you get height and width together. Raise the ratio and you get height alone.

That second move is the one people forget they have. If the goal is diameter and the inner fender is the constraint, a taller series on the original width does the job without adding a millimetre across. If the goal is grip on a fixed diameter, a lower series on a wider casing holds the height while widening the footprint.
