M+S and the three-peak snowflake are two different claims

A tire can wear M+S because of the shape of its grooves. It can only wear the snowflake by out-accelerating a reference tire on snow by ten percent.

Two winter-related markings turn up on light-truck and all-season sidewalls, often together, and they are not two grades of the same thing. They come from different eras, different processes and different kinds of evidence.

M+S: a geometric description, declared by the manufacturer

M+S, M/S, M&S and MUD AND SNOW all mean the same thing. The definition is dimensional: it describes a tread pattern with a certain proportion of void — the gaps between the blocks — and groove widths and depths above stated minimums.

Two features of that definition matter more than the marking itself:

  • It is about the shape of the tread, not the behaviour of the tire. Nothing is driven, braked, or measured on snow to earn it.
  • It is self-declared. The manufacturer certifies that its pattern meets the geometry. No independent test is submitted.

That is not a scandal, it is what the marking was designed to be in the 1970s: a way of distinguishing an open, blocky all-season pattern from a fine-ribbed summer one. Almost every all-terrain and all-season tire sold in North America carries it, which is precisely why it discriminates so little.

The three-peak mountain snowflake: a passed test

The pictogram of three peaks with a snowflake inside is earned, not declared. The candidate tire is tested against a Standard Reference Test Tire on medium-packed snow using the ASTM F1805 method, which measures straight-line driving traction on a single wheel.

The reference tire scores 100 by definition. The candidate must reach an index of at least 110 — ten percent more forward traction than the reference — to qualify for the symbol.

What the test covers is narrow and worth stating exactly:

  • It measures acceleration traction on packed snow.
  • It does not measure braking distance.
  • It does not measure cornering grip.
  • It does not test ice at all.

So the snowflake is real evidence of one specific capability, and silence on three others. A tire that carries it is not thereby a winter tire in the full sense — dedicated winter tires differ in compound behaviour at low temperature, which no part of this test examines.

Why both appear together

They are not exclusive. A tire whose pattern meets the M+S geometry and whose performance clears the snow traction index carries both, and many all-terrain tires now do. The M+S marking is the older and broader claim; the snowflake is the narrower and stronger one.

Where only M+S appears, nothing has been tested. Where the snowflake appears, one thing has.

Several jurisdictions write these symbols into their winter regulations, and the rules are neither uniform nor stable:

  • Some require the snowflake specifically during a fixed winter window.
  • Some accept M+S alone, sometimes with a minimum tread depth attached.
  • Some apply requirements only to particular roads, mountain passes or vehicle classes, and only when signs are posted or conditions are declared.

That is a matter for the rules where you drive, and those rules change from season to season. The markings themselves are internationally consistent; what any given authority does with them is not.

What produces the result

Snow traction on a driven wheel comes from two mechanisms working together, and neither is visible in the size code.

  • Snow-on-snow shear. Open tread voids pack with snow, and packed snow gripping packed snow is a better interface than rubber gripping snow. This is the part the M+S geometry gestures at.
  • Biting edges. Sipes — the fine slits cut across each tread block — multiply the number of edges presented to the surface, and they keep working as the block deforms under load.

Compound matters as much as either, and it is the one thing that separates an all-terrain tire carrying the snowflake from a dedicated winter tire. A winter compound stays pliable at temperatures where an all-season compound stiffens; the snow traction test is run in conditions where that difference is present but is not what is being measured.

The marking was earned by a new tire

The test is conducted on full tread depth. As a tire wears, the void ratio falls, the sipes get shallower and shorter, and the snow performance the symbol certified declines with them — while the symbol itself stays moulded into the sidewall for the life of the casing.

This is why jurisdictions that recognise the snowflake frequently attach a minimum remaining tread depth to it. The symbol records what the tire could do when it was new; the tread depth gauge records what is left.

The other winter markings you may see

  • SEVERE SNOW CONDITIONS spelled out in words, alongside or instead of the pictogram.
  • Studdable tires, moulded with holes for studs. Studs are separately regulated almost everywhere and are not implied by either symbol.
  • Ice grip markings used in some markets, which come from a different test again.

What none of this touches

Neither marking says anything about the tire's size, load index, speed symbol or geometry. A winter tire in a smaller size than the original — a common choice, since narrower casings and taller sidewalls suit a winter wheel package — changes the arithmetic on this site in exactly the way any other size change would.

Winter tires also frequently carry a lower speed symbol than the tire they replace, which the speed rating table covers. And if you are fitting a dedicated winter set on its own wheels, plus sizing works in reverse: the usual move is a smaller wheel with more sidewall at the same rolling diameter.
