Red dots, yellow dots, and what a fitter does with them
Two dots, two methods, and only one of them can be used on any given wheel — which is why fitters sometimes ignore both.
A new tire often arrives with small painted dots on the sidewall, usually near the bead. They are not decoration, not inspection marks and not batch identifiers. They are instructions for how the tire should be oriented on the wheel, and they survive only until the first wash.
The yellow dot: the lightest point
Yellow marks the tire's lightest point in terms of static weight distribution.
A wheel is not perfectly balanced either, and its heaviest point is conventionally at the valve stem — the hole in the rim removes material and the stem assembly adds a small mass in a fixed place. Aligning the tire's lightest point with the wheel's heaviest partially cancels the two imbalances against each other.
The practical benefit is that less corrective weight is needed to finish the balance on the machine. This is called weight matching, and it is the more commonly used of the two methods.
The red dot: the high point of radial force variation
Red marks something different and less intuitive. It is the point of maximum radial force variation — the place where the tire is stiffest, so that a given deflection produces the greatest force.
That is not a measure of the tire's shape but of its stiffness, and a tire can be geometrically round and still vary in force around its circumference because the plies overlap somewhere.
Some wheels carry a corresponding mark — often a dimple, a coloured dot or a stamp — identifying their lowest radial point. Aligning the tire's stiffest point with the wheel's lowest point cancels one against the other. This is uniformity matching, or match mounting, and where both marks exist it produces a smoother assembly than weight matching alone.
The two methods are mutually exclusive
Both cannot be honoured on the same wheel unless the wheel's low point and its valve stem happen to coincide, which they generally do not.
The convention: if the wheel carries a uniformity mark, match the red dot to it. If it does not, match the yellow dot to the valve stem. Where a tire carries both dots and the wheel carries no mark, the yellow dot is the one to use.
None of this is a substitute for balancing. Both methods reduce how much correction is needed; the assembly still goes on the balancer afterwards.
The yellow dot only addresses half of what a balancer corrects
Imbalance comes in two forms and the dot speaks to one of them. Static imbalance is a heavy spot at one point around the circumference: let the wheel hang free and it rolls to put that spot at the bottom. That is what weight matching partly cancels.
Couple imbalance is a heavy spot on one side of the tread band and a matching light spot on the other, at the opposite point round the wheel. It leaves the assembly perfectly balanced when it is hanging still and makes it try to steer itself side to side once it is spinning. No amount of rotating the tire on the rim touches it, because the two masses are displaced across the wheel's width rather than around its circumference. That is why a two-plane balancer applies weight to both the inner and the outer rim flange rather than to one.
Other marks you may find
- A white dot or circle, used by some manufacturers as an internal quality or inspection mark rather than as a mounting instruction.
- A coloured stripe across the tread, applied for warehouse identification. It wears off in a few hundred miles and means nothing to a fitter.
- A raised triangle or arrow on the sidewall, marking the location of the tread wear indicators so you can find them without hunting around the circumference.
- A rotation arrow, which is not a dot at all but is genuinely mandatory: a directional tread pattern fitted backwards behaves differently in standing water, and there is no way to correct it short of dismounting.

Why the marks so often go unused
They are painted, not moulded, and a tire that has been stored, shipped and handled may arrive with them faded or gone. Many wheels carry no uniformity mark at all. And a modern road-force balancing machine measures radial force variation directly on the assembled wheel and tire, then tells the operator how far to rotate the tire on the rim — which supersedes the dots entirely by measuring what they were supposed to indicate.
Where that equipment is not available, the dots are a free improvement and cost nothing but attention at mounting time.
What none of it affects
Not one figure this site computes. Diameter, section width, sidewall height, circumference and revolutions per mile are properties of the size code, and they are identical whichever way round the tire went on the wheel. What the marks affect is vibration, corrective weight and how smooth the assembly feels — and none of those is derivable from a marking on the sidewall.
