Where it usually appears
On many of the cars that carry this size, it is fitted at the rear only, with something narrower on the front axle. That arrangement is called a staggered set, and it changes what the numbers on this page mean.
When both axles run the same size, rolling diameter is a property of the car. When they do not, the front and rear axles cover different distances per wheel revolution, and everything that compares wheel speeds — stability control, traction control, and in four-wheel-drive vehicles the centre differential — is working with two figures rather than one. 255/40R18 and this size print the same overall diameter to two decimal places. They carry the same tread width and differ only in how the standing height is divided: an inch of wheel against half an inch of sidewall at each end.
Sidewall, at three and a half inches
3.51 in is the second-shallowest figure among the 19-inch sizes here, above only 245/35R19's 3.38 in. At that depth the casing has almost no scope to change shape between one wheel and another, so what the tire measures on the car tracks the wheel it is mounted on more closely than it tracks the number in the code.
