What the two numbers are actually promising
Its derived aspect ratio, which appears nowhere on the tire, is 64.
The first number is the honest one. Diameter is a single unambiguous dimension, and although a real tire seldom lands exactly on its nominal figure, everybody measuring it is measuring the same thing.
The second number is not that. Section width is the distance across the widest point of the inflated casing — including the sidewall bulge, including any protective rib moulded into it — measured on one specified rim width at one specified pressure. It is not the width of the tread blocks, and it is not what a tape laid across the contact patch will read.
Why two people get two answers
Because the figure is defined against a measuring rim, the same tire on a narrower wheel measures narrower and stands marginally taller, and on a wider wheel measures wider and sits marginally lower. 17-inch truck wheels are sold across a broad range of widths, so two sets of nominally identical 33x12.50R17s on two vehicles can genuinely differ by a visible amount.
None of that is a fault in the code. It is what the code means, and it is why comparing your measured width against someone else's is only meaningful if the rim widths match.
The other 33 on this wheel
33x10.50R17 is the same height. Not approximately the same height — identical, at 33.00 in, with a diameter difference of 0.00 in and no change whatsoever to circumference, revolutions per mile, speedometer reading or gearing.
The difference between the two codes is 2.00 in of section width, which is the largest gap between two sizes of equal diameter anywhere in this catalogue's 17-inch band. Anyone deciding between them is making a decision about width alone, expressed as if it were a decision about tire size.

Four metric codes land within 0.35 in of this size, and every one of them is narrower — by between 0.89 in and 2.46 in. That is the consistent pattern on a 17-inch wheel: the flotation 33 is not meaningfully taller than the metric sizes it competes with, and it is reliably wider than all of them.
255/80R17 is the extreme case. It is 0.06 in taller than this tire and 2.46 in narrower, which means two tires that agree on height to within a sixteenth of an inch differ in width by more than the length of a thumb.
Flotation widths come in coarser steps
There is a structural reason the flotation options are always the wide ones. Metric section widths are catalogued in 10 mm increments — 265, 275, 285, 295, 305, 315 — and 10 mm is 0.39 in. Flotation widths step in whole inches: 9.50, 10.50, 11.50, 12.50, 13.50.
So a metric code lets you tune section width in units about two-fifths of an inch wide, while a flotation code offers roughly two and a half times that granularity. On this wheel, the entire metric range from 265 to 315 fits inside the gap between 33x10.50R17 and 33x12.50R17.
The one vehicle that lists it
Among the vehicle records here, only the fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma names 33x12.50R17 as a common upgrade. Coming from its 265/70R17 at 31.61 in, that is +1.39 in and 4.41%, turning an indicated 70 mph into an actual 73.1 mph.
Going further on the same wheel means 34x10.50R17 at +1.00 in — but 2.00 in narrower — or 315/70R17 at +1.36 in and 4.13%, which is within 0.10 in of this size's width.
Nine flotation codes share this wheel
Count the flotation sizes catalogued on each wheel diameter and the 17 is not merely ahead, it is ahead by a factor of two. Nine codes live here: heights of 32, 33, 34, 35, 37 and 40 inches, spread across just four section widths — 10.50, 11.50, 12.50 and 13.50 in.

The 17 is the only wheel where the two dimensions come apart properly. Two heights on it are offered at two widths each — 33 at 10.50 and 12.50, 35 at 11.50 and 12.50 — and 37 is offered at 12.50 and 13.50. That is why the decision described earlier, choosing between two codes with an identical diameter, is a decision that mostly exists on this wheel and nowhere else.
