Put these two side by side and almost nothing happens. That is the point of them.
The trade being made
A plus-one is a swap, not an upgrade: you take an inch of wheel diameter and pay for it out of sidewall, so that the tire ends up the same height it started. Here the payment is visible in the codes. The 15-inch size carries 4.99 in of sidewall. The 16-inch size carries 4.44 in. The wheel grew by one inch — half an inch at the top of the tire and half at the bottom — and the sidewall gave up 0.55 in at each end to absorb it.
Get that exchange exactly right and the rolling diameter does not move. Nobody gets it exactly right, because tire sizes come in 10 mm width increments and 5-point aspect steps, and those steps do not divide evenly into an inch of wheel.
Which way it misses
Low, by 0.10 in. 195/65R15 computes to 24.98 in overall; 205/55R16 computes to 24.88 in. That is 0.41% of the original diameter, and it makes the 16-inch fitment the slightly smaller tire — a speedometer calibrated for the 15s would read very slightly high afterwards.
Nobody will ever detect this. A tenth of an inch across a 25-inch tire is inside the manufacturing spread between two brands of the same size, and comfortably inside the tolerance an instrument cluster is built to. If your reason for reading this page was the speedometer, the answer is that there is nothing here.
The number that actually changed
Width, and by a larger fraction than anything else on the page. 7.68 in becomes 8.07 in — 10 mm of nominal section width, 5.13% more casing. The wheel wells of the cars these two sizes appear on were drawn with that in mind, but rim width was not: a 205 section wants a wider rim than a 195 does, and a set of 16-inch wheels bought for the look rather than the fitment can leave the tire mounted narrower than its nominal width and standing a little taller than the figure above.
What a shorter sidewall does that arithmetic cannot see
The two tires roll the same distance per revolution, near enough. They do not behave the same. A 4.44 in sidewall has 11% less rubber column between the rim and the road than a 4.99 in one, and every impact that column would have absorbed arrives somewhere else instead — at the wheel, at the suspension, at the seat.
This is the honest reason the pair is interesting, and it is the part the comparison table above cannot show you. Rolling diameter is preserved. Compliance is not. Plus-sizing trades one for the other by design, and the trade is the product, not a side effect of it.
Where this pair shows up
It is the archetype rather than one car's problem. Small hatchbacks and compact saloons were sold on 15-inch wheels with 195/65R15 for two decades, and the 16-inch alloy option almost always came wearing 205/55R16 — the same car, one trim level apart. A used buyer comparing two examples on a forecourt is comparing exactly these two tires, and the geometry says the cars will read the same speed and cover the same ground.
Going one step further
The pattern continues upward, and it stops behaving this well. Take the same starting point up two wheel sizes to 225/45R17 and the numbers stay tidy; take it to a 40-series on an 18 and the sidewall runs out of room to shrink before the wheel stops growing, so the diameter starts drifting upward instead. What is not settled here
Load rating. A 195/65R15 and a 205/55R16 are sold across different bands of load index because they are fitted to different cars, and the number on your door-jamb placard is a minimum, not a suggestion — it is the one figure in this comparison that geometry has no opinion about.
