Platforms recorded with this size
There is a size in every market that acts as the centre of gravity for the whole passenger catalogue. In Europe and much of Asia it is this one. Compact hatchbacks moved up to it from 15-inch wheels, small saloons moved down to it from sportier 17s, and a large slice of the compact-MPV and small-estate market was delivered on it directly.

The 205 mm width, read across four aspect ratios
This catalogue carries 205 mm at four different aspect ratios, and putting them in diameter order shows something that surprises people:

The 15-inch entry is taller than both 16-inch entries and the 17-inch entry. Wheel diameter tells you almost nothing about overall diameter on its own, because a 65-series sidewall on a 15-inch wheel contributes 5.25 in twice over while a 50-series sidewall on a 17 contributes only 4.04 in twice over. The wheel is the smaller half of the sum in every one of these cases.
The pairing that matters most in practice is 205/55R16 against 205/50R17: identical section width, one inch of extra wheel, and a diameter difference of only 0.19 in — 0.78%. That is what a clean plus-one looks like when the tire industry has done its job, and it is why 205/50R17 exists at all.
Ten millimetres, on this wheel, at this aspect ratio
195/55R16 stands 24.44 in; 215/55R16 stands 25.31 in. Each is 0.43 in and 1.74% from this size, in opposite directions. Widening 10 mm at a 55-series aspect ratio adds less height than the same 10 mm at 65-series would, because the sidewall is a smaller fraction of a slightly larger number — the height added is 2 × 0.55 × 10 mm.
Against 225/45R17, a size fitted to the sportier versions of many of the same cars, the diameter gap is 0.09 in — 0.38%. The two are the same rolling diameter for every practical purpose, and differ by 0.79 in of section width — with 4.44 in of sidewall here against 3.99 in there.
Standard load and reinforced, in the same size
This is one of the sizes where the load index printed after the code varies substantially between tires that are otherwise identically marked. Heavier compact MPVs and estates were commonly delivered on reinforced casings, and the same size in a standard-load construction carries less. The rim it is measured on
The 8.07 in figure is a measurement taken on one specified wheel, and 16-inch wheels for this size are sold across a range of widths. A casing on the wide end of that range measures wider and stands very slightly shorter; on the narrow end, the reverse. With 4.44 in of sidewall there is more scope here than on a low-profile size for the tire to absorb the difference, which is why the effect is usually noticed only when two owners compare tape-measure readings and conclude one of them has the wrong tire. Why the 16-inch wheel became the floor
Two forces pushed the same way. Brake discs grew, which removed 15-inch wheels from the option list on many platforms. And the styling premium attached to visible wheel became strong enough that manufacturers stopped offering the smallest wheel at all on mid and high trims. The result is that 205/55R16 inherited the position 195/65R15 used to hold: the size the base car gets, the size the winter set is bought in, and the size with the deepest choice of tread patterns at the lowest prices.
At 810.7 revolutions per mile this size turns more often than almost anything else on a modern car, which is worth remembering when reading tread-life figures — a small tire covers the same road with more rotations of the same rubber.
