Why the diameter moves at all

A plus-one usually lands close because a single 10 mm width step and a single 5-point aspect step roughly cancel an inch of wheel. Do it twice and the arithmetic loses its balance, because the sidewall you are spending gets smaller every time you spend it. Five points of aspect ratio on a 205 is worth about 0.40 in of sidewall; five points on a 225 is worth about 0.44 in — but by the time you are at a 40-series, there are only eight of those five-point steps left in the whole scale before the sidewall reaches zero.

So the 18-inch fitment overshoots. 205/55R16 works out to 24.88 in; 225/40R18 works out to 25.09 in. The taller tire is the one on the bigger wheel, by 0.21 in.

Whether 0.84% matters

Not to the instrument cluster. Every error in the panel above is smaller than the drift a single set of tires accumulates between new and worn, which is the honest benchmark for whether a speedometer figure is worth acting on.

It matters somewhere else. On a car with a mechanical limit at the top of the arch — and small hatchbacks with 18-inch wheels frequently do — a fifth of an inch of extra radius arrives at the one place there is no room, and it arrives with 0.79 in of extra section width alongside it. The speedometer is fine. The fender may not be, and the two facts are unrelated.

The dimension that took the hit

Sidewall height falls from 4.44 in to 3.54 in. That is a fifth of the rubber column removed across two steps, and it is the whole reason the pair is worth a page: the arithmetic above says these two tires are near-interchangeable, and anyone who has driven both knows they are nothing of the sort.

A 3.54 in sidewall is short enough that the rim edge sits close to the outside of the tire's deflection under a hard impact. That is a real physical consequence of a real geometric change, and it is the one plus-two costs you.

Why the Golf is the case study

Because the Mk7 was sold across essentially this entire range, factory-fitted, with the same suspension underneath. The base trims wore 205/55R16 and the sportier ones wore 225/40R18, so this is not a modification question — it is two versions of the same car, and the manufacturer accepted the 0.21 in because it had also calibrated for it.

That is the distinction worth holding on to. A factory plus-two is engineered around; an aftermarket one inherits the calibration of whatever it replaced.

The three-step version

The Mk7 also came on 15s. Loading the 15-inch size against the 17-inch one shows the same family of sizes hitting the target almost perfectly across two steps, which makes the 18 the outlier rather than the pattern. It is the 40-series that breaks the run, not the 18-inch wheel.

What the wheel-speed sensors see

Revolutions per mile falls from 810.7 to 803.9, seven fewer rotations in a mile. Every system that counts wheel pulses inherits that shift: the speedometer, the odometer, the traction-control threshold and, on cars that use wheel speed to infer pressure, the indirect tire-pressure monitor. None of them is broken by 0.84%, and all of them are now measuring against a reference that has moved.

Reading the two codes honestly

The 205 and the 225 differ by 20 mm on paper and 0.79 in in fact. The 55 and the 40 are not dimensions at all — they are percentages of two different numbers, which is why 55% of 205 and 40% of 225 are not related in any intuitive way and have to be worked out. The size code reference sets out the notation element by element; this page is what happens when you apply it twice in a row.

Nothing above says whether either size clears your car. Section width, wheel offset and the shape of the arch decide that, and they are properties of the vehicle rather than of a tire.
