Widen the casing and shorten the profile at the same time and the profile wins. The 275 is the shorter tire by nearly half an inch.
The two moves, and their sizes
- 255 mm to 275 mm adds 0.79 in of section width, and would on its own add sidewall
- 40-series to 35-series removes more sidewall than the extra width adds
Net sidewall: 4.02 in down to 3.79 in. Doubled, that is 0.45 in off the overall diameter — a 1.67% reduction, and the speedometer reads high as a result, which is the unusual direction for this site.
Why it is done anyway
Because on a staggered rear-drive setup the objective is contact patch at the driven axle, and the wheel diameter is fixed by the front. There is no room to add sidewall, so the only way to add casing width is to take profile out — which shortens the tire. That is a structural consequence of staggered fitment rather than a design choice anyone made independently.
What the height loss actually affects
Very little, because the front tires have not changed. A rear axle running 0.45 in shorter tires than nominal sits fractionally lower at the back and turns fractionally faster for a given road speed, and on a vehicle whose speedometer is driven from the front or from the transmission this mostly disappears into the noise.
Where it does register is on stability-control systems that compare front and rear wheel speeds. A 1.67% standing difference between axles is small, and it is not zero.
One variable in the code, one outside it
Both codes close on R19, so wheel diameter is held and the comparison is genuinely about the casing: 20 mm of nominal section, 10.04 in against 10.83 in, and five points of aspect ratio against it. The second wheel dimension does not appear in either code. Rim width is set per tire by the manufacturer, it is absent from this site's data, and on a staggered car the rear wheel is often not the width of the front one to begin with — the staggered fitments reference covers what else changes when the two axles differ.
The front-axle question instead
If the wheel is what is moving rather than the tire, 235/55R17 against 235/50R18 is the same platform's plus-one, with the width held constant and only the profile changing — the exact opposite arrangement of variables.
