By the time these trucks were sold, the industry had already moved to 17s and 18s. Their owners mostly did not, and 285/75R16 is the reason why.

The size that keeps a 16-inch wheel useful

285/75R16 computes to 32.83 in. That is 0.17 in short of a genuine 33 and closer to one than any other commonly stocked metric size on a 16-inch wheel gets. It manages it with an 8.42 in sidewall — a very tall column of rubber by modern standards, and only possible because the wheel underneath is small.

Against the 30.61 in the factory fitted, that is 2.22 in of extra diameter, or 7.27%. Both figures come entirely from the sidewall, since the wheel is unchanged.

Two steps taken together

Like most of the interesting jumps, this one moves width and aspect ratio at the same time: 265 to 285, and 70-series to 75-series. The width contribution is modest — 10.43 in to 11.22 in, 0.79 in — and the aspect-ratio contribution is what does the work.

That balance is unusual and it is the reason the swap suits these trucks. A mid-size pickup with a narrow track and a tight inner fender can absorb 0.79 in of width far more easily than it can absorb two inches of it, and this size delivers most of its extra diameter without asking for the space that a flotation 33 would.

The arithmetic the odometer inherits

Each wheel turns 659.0 times per mile on the factory size and 614.3 times on the larger one. That is roughly 45 fewer revolutions, and it is where all of the following come from at once:

  • every speedometer and odometer reading in the panel above
  • an engine turning about 7% slower at any given road speed
  • a trip computer's fuel-economy figure reading low by the same proportion, because it divides by the distance the odometer believes in

They are not four effects. They are one ratio, read four ways.

The 16-inch advantage that is rarely stated

Steel wheels. A great many of these trucks are still on their original 16-inch steels or on cheap replacements, and a 16-inch wheel is both lighter and considerably cheaper to replace than the 17s and 18s that succeeded it. Fitting a 33-inch-class tire without buying wheels at all is a real economic argument, and it is the practical reason this pairing outlived the vehicles' production runs.

The trade is that tire choice at 16 inches has narrowed steadily. Aggressive tread patterns in 285/75R16 are far less numerous than in 285/70R17, and the direction of travel is not reversing.

The one-variable version

If you want to see what the aspect ratio alone contributes, 265/70R16 against 265/75R16 holds the width completely still and moves only the profile — 1.04 in, against the 2.22 in here. Subtract one from the other and the remaining 1.18 in is what the extra 20 mm of width is worth in height on this platform.

The spare is part of the decision

Both of these trucks carry their spare underslung behind the rear axle, in a well sized around the factory tire. A 32.83 in tire on an 11.22 in casing is a substantially larger object than a 30.61 in one, and whether the carrier and the winch cable accept it is a question about a specific truck's hardware rather than about either size code. It is the most commonly overlooked consequence of this particular swap, because it is invisible until the fifth tire is bought.

Ride height and its limits

Half of the 2.22 in goes under the axle and half of it goes over the top of the tire, which on these trucks is the half that decides the outcome — the arch is a fixed distance from the hub and does not care how tall the tire underneath it has become. Where the arithmetic ends

Load index is the omission that matters most here. These trucks are frequently loaded, and 285/75R16 is sold both as a P-metric passenger tire and as an LT-marked light-truck tire with a heavier casing and a much higher reference pressure. The two are the same shape and are not equivalent in capacity. The number your vehicle needs is on the door-jamb placard, and no dimension on this page has any bearing on it.
