What the step is worth here

0.52 in of extra sidewall, counted above and below the wheel, which takes the diameter to 31.65 in. The wheel does not move, so the axle inherits that half inch exactly.

The same step is worth precisely the same 0.52 in one wheel size up, where a 265 casing goes from 65-series to 70 instead of 70 to 75. The aspect ratio is applied to the casing and knows nothing about what the tire is mounted on: the wheel decides where the rubber sits, never how much of it there is.

Both were factory options

That is what makes this pairing useful rather than academic. Tacomas of this generation appeared on both sizes depending on trim and market, so the arithmetic describes a difference between two production trucks rather than a modification.

It also means both figures below describe production configurations rather than modifications. What the recorded fitments give is the wheel diameter — 16 in in both cases — and nothing about wheel width, which is not part of a size code and is not part of the data behind this page.

Why the taller one is the one people want

Because 31.65 in is within touching distance of the 31-inch flotation class while remaining a mainstream metric size, and because it gets there without adding a millimetre of casing. On a mid-size pickup with limited room at the steering stop, gaining an inch of height for no width at all is the cheapest change available.

The limit of the approach

There is nowhere further to go. Above 75-series on a 265 casing the sizes essentially stop being made, so an owner who wants more height on the same 16-inch wheel has to widen — which is what 285/75R16 does, reaching 32.83 in with 0.79 in more casing.

The odometer, over a year

At 3.41%, a truck driven fifteen thousand indicated miles has actually covered a little over fifteen and a half thousand. Five hundred unrecorded miles a year is not enough to matter to anything except a maintenance schedule read literally, and it is the most concrete way to express what a three per cent error means in ordinary use.

For the arithmetic itself

The aspect ratio reference explains why a five-point step is worth 0.52 in on this casing and a different figure on any other. The short version: it is five per cent of whatever the section width happens to be, so wide tires gain more from the same nominal step than narrow ones do.
