The taller of the Frontier's two factory sizes is 1.35 in short of a 33 — which is closer than most factory tires get, and not close enough to call the two interchangeable.

The width change is bigger in absolute inches than the height change, and it is nearly five times larger as a proportion. On a mid-size pickup, that is the figure that determines whether the swap happens.
Sixteen inches is a lot of sidewall
Both of these tires carry over 7.8 in between the rim and the road, which is more than any 17-inch or 20-inch tire of comparable diameter can offer. That is the enduring advantage of the 16-inch wheel, and it is why owners of trucks from this era are often reluctant to move up.
The flotation size's derived aspect ratio is 68, against the metric size's stated 75. Close enough that the two casings are similar in shape as well as in height — more so than the equivalent pairing on a 17-inch wheel manages.
The readings
A Frontier on 3.73:1 gears would need 3.89:1 to leave engine speed untouched, and 3.91:1 is the closest set anyone makes — which on a truck of this size and age is a conversion nobody performs for four per cent.
Left alone, it reads as a needle three miles an hour light at motorway pace.
The rim these tires sit on
Frontiers of this generation left the factory on 16-inch wheels. That is a diameter, and it is the
only wheel dimension a fitment record or a size code carries; how wide those wheels are is not
recorded here and is not derivable from either 265/75R16 or 33x12.50R16. It matters because the
flotation casing is 2.07 in wider in nominal terms, and the wider the casing the more of its final
shape the wheel decides. On a rim narrower than its reference the tread edges tuck under, which
costs width and hands a little back as height: below 12.50 in across, above 33.00 in tall. Both of
the page's headline gaps move as a result, in opposite
directions: the 2.07 in of width closes a little and the 1.35 in of height opens a little. By how
much is a tape-measure question.
The narrower way to the same height
There is no widely available narrow 33 on a 16-inch wheel, which is the practical constraint here. The nearest metric approach is 285/75R16 at 32.83 in, only 0.17 in short of the flotation size and 1.28 in narrower — a substantially better match than the 265 on both counts, and the size most owners in this position end up choosing.
