Take 10 mm out of the section width, put five points into the aspect ratio, and the tire gets bigger. That is the result here and it surprises almost everybody.

Why the narrower tire wins on height

Because the aspect ratio is a percentage, and five points is worth far more than 10 mm of casing is.

The width goes the other way

11.22 in down to 10.83 in — 0.39 in narrower, 3.51%. So the two tires trade: one is wider, the other is taller, and neither is bigger in every dimension.

That is unusual in this comparison set, where the second size is normally larger on both counts, and it is the reason the pairing is worth publishing rather than obvious.

What the vehicle sees

2.27%, with the taller tire under-reading. The sign is the part worth pausing on: the narrower tire is the one that makes the speedometer optimistic, which is the opposite of what the width figures alone would suggest. Ten millimetres of section came off and five aspect points went on, and the aspect points won.

Why 22-inch fitments behave like this

Because there is so little sidewall to begin with. At 5.05 in on a 22-inch wheel, a five-point aspect step is over seven per cent of the rubber column, where the same step on a 15-inch truck tire would be a much smaller proportion of a much taller one. Small profile changes have outsized effects at the bottom of the sidewall scale, which is exactly what this pairing measures.

Both are factory fitments

Neither of these is an aftermarket size. Ram 1500s are delivered on 22-inch wheels with both, across different trims and packages, so this comparison describes two production configurations rather than a modification. The manufacturer accepted a 0.73 in spread inside its own range and calibrated for it.

The practical difference

Half an inch more rubber between a 22-inch rim and the road, in exchange for a slightly narrower footprint. On a truck delivered on wheels this large, that is the trade most owners are actually looking for when they compare these two sizes.
