A size that arrives on vehicles rather than in catalogues

Most light-truck sizes reach the aftermarket first and get adopted by manufacturers afterwards. 255/75R17 went the other way. Jeep listed it on the Wrangler JK from 2007 and carried it forward onto the JL from 2018; Ford specified it under the sixth-generation Bronco from 2021. On the JK record it appears twice — once plain, once as LT255/75R17 — which is the plainest evidence available that one casing dimension was being built to two different service standards for one vehicle.

Worked from the code, it stands 32.06 in tall on 10.04 in of section width, with 7.53 in of sidewall above the bead on each side. Circumference is 100.7 in, so it turns 629.1 times in a mile.

Ten inches wide, on a wheel where everything else is eleven or twelve

Set it against the flotation size that matches it in height. A 32x11.50R17 measures 32.00 in — six hundredths of an inch shorter, a difference no instrument on the vehicle can register. Its section width is 11.50 in. That is 1.46 in of extra rubber across the tire for no change in how tall it stands.

This is the reason the two sizes behave differently in a wheel well and identically on a speedometer. Diameter drives every piece of arithmetic on this site: revolutions per mile, gearing, the reading on the cluster. Width drives none of it, and drives most of what a fender actually objects to when the wheel is turned to full lock. A reader who swaps 255/75R17 for 32x11.50R17 changes nothing the calculator can see and a great deal it cannot.

Two things stand out in that column of diameters. The first is how tightly packed the band is: seven genuinely-sold sizes between 31.47 in and 33.00 in. The second is that the two steps most people consider — to 285/70R17 or to a 33 — are both small. Going to 33x12.50R17 is a 2.94% change. An indicated 70 mph becomes an actual 72.1 mph, and an odometer showing 100 miles has covered 102.9.

Why the narrow one exists at all

A 255 on a 17-inch wheel with a 75 aspect ratio is a deliberate combination: it buys height out of sidewall instead of out of width. Because aspect ratio is a percentage of the section width, a narrow tire needs a high number to get anywhere. At 75, the sidewall works out at 7.53 in. A 285/70R17 — a casing 30 mm wider and five aspect points lower in shape — carries 7.85 in. The narrow size lands within a third of an inch of the wide one's sidewall purely by turning the percentage up.

That narrowness is what the size is for. Every inch of extra section width has to go somewhere, and on a short-wheelbase vehicle with a lot of steering angle it goes towards the parts of the body and suspension that are closest to the tire when the wheels are turned. Measuring the gap in question is the only way to know it; the arithmetic here cannot see it at all, because diameter is unchanged.

Why the JK record lists the code twice

Both entries on that record compute to 32.06 in, because the prefix is not part of the geometry. What separates them is the service description printed after the code, and on this size the range of those numbers is unusually wide — the same three dimensions are produced for a Wrangler and for a Bronco with a different roof and a different curb weight.

The practical consequence is that "255/75R17" is not enough information to know what a tire will carry. The index after it is, and it is compared against a figure printed on the vehicle rather than derived from anything on this page. The figures are geometric
