Honda Civic 11th gen: both popular fitments come out smaller

Neither factory axle ratios nor transmission gear ratios are recorded for this platform. A figure that could not be confirmed against a source is left out rather than printed: an invented ratio yields engine-speed arithmetic that looks exactly as authoritative as a measured one. Three sizes, held to a seventh of an inch
215/55R16 measures 25.31 in, 235/40R18 measures 25.40 in and 215/50R17 measures 25.46 in. The
spread across the whole factory range is 0.15 in, or 0.61%.
The widths tell a different story: 8.46 in on both the 16 and 17-inch fitments, 9.25 in on the 18. And the sidewalls collapse across the range — 4.66 in, 4.23 in, 3.70 in — which is what paying for a larger wheel on a compact car actually buys and costs.
The recorded fitments both go down
225/45R17at 24.97 in — −0.49 in, 1.93% from215/50R17.225/40R18at 25.09 in — −0.38 in, 1.48% from the same start.
Both add 0.39 in of section width and both remove height. Measured from the 16-inch fitment they
are −1.34% and −0.89% respectively; measured from the 18-inch 235/40R18, both are narrower as
well as shorter.
The pattern is characteristic of aftermarket wheel and tire packages on a compact car: the buyer is after a wider contact patch, a shorter sidewall and a particular appearance, and rolling diameter is the variable that gets spent to get there.
Which way the speedometer moves
This is worth being explicit about, because most tire discussions assume the opposite direction.
A shorter tire covers less ground per revolution, so the wheel turns more often for the same distance and the instrument reads high. At −1.93%, an indicated 70 mph is really 68.6, and 100 miles on the odometer is 98.1 actually covered.
Two consequences follow. The odometer accumulates faster than the distance driven, which matters for lease limits and service intervals. And since manufacturers already bias speedometers to read slightly high, a shorter tire adds to that bias rather than cancelling it — the reading drifts further from true, not closer.
What is being traded
From 215/50R17 to 225/45R17:

Less than a quarter of an inch of sidewall separates them, and on a car with 4 inches of it to begin with, that quarter inch is a meaningful proportion of the cushion between the rim flange and a pothole edge.
Holding the diameter instead
Reducing rolling diameter is a choice rather than a requirement, and the alternative is available in the same catalogue. A wider tire at a higher aspect ratio on the same wheel — or the next wheel size up — can hold the original height while still widening the contact patch, and the arithmetic for finding one is three lines: compute the original diameter, subtract the new wheel diameter, halve it, and divide by the intended width.
Plus sizing works the method through, and the size converter will do the search across sizes that actually exist rather than the one the arithmetic invents.
The reason so many packages come out shorter anyway is that the low-profile sizes people want are manufactured in the widths and series that fashion supports, and holding diameter exactly is usually not what anyone was trying to do.
Why the blank ratio column costs this car almost nothing
At changes under 2% the gearing consequence is not measurable in ordinary driving. More to the point, the question barely applies: where a continuously variable transmission is fitted there is no discrete top gear for a taller tire to lengthen. The belt simply sits at a marginally different ratio for the same road speed, and the driver's only evidence is the speedometer.
What the numbers do not settle
Caliper clearance behind a smaller rim, casing-to-strut room at full lock, and the placard's load figure — three separate checks, none of them readable off a size code. The caliper question is the live one on this model in particular, because the performance version's front brakes are larger than the base car's while the bodywork and the size codes look near enough identical from three feet away.
