Nissan Frontier (D41): the 18-inch trim starts shortest, not tallest

Three factory sizes covering 1.09 in of diameter, with the wheel-size order and the tire-size order running exactly opposite to each other.

Sizes owners of this platform are widely observed to run. An observation about a community, not a finding about your vehicle.

Neither factory axle ratios nor transmission gear ratios are recorded for this platform. A figure that could not be confirmed against a source is left out rather than printed: an invented ratio yields engine-speed arithmetic that looks exactly as authoritative as a measured one. How these numbers are calculated sets out the rule.

The inverted ladder

  • 265/60R18 — 30.52 in
  • 255/70R17 — 31.06 in
  • 265/70R17 — 31.61 in

The 18-inch fitment is the shortest of the three, 3.44% below the taller of the two 17-inch sizes. That is worth stating plainly because the instinct runs the other way: a larger wheel reads as a larger tire, and here it is not.

Between the two 17-inch sizes, the difference is one width step — 255 to 265 at the same 70 aspect ratio — worth 0.55 in of diameter and 0.39 in of section width.

The upgrade that keeps your wheels

275/70R18 at 33.16 in is the option available to owners of the 18-inch trim without buying anything but tires. From 265/60R18 it is +2.64 in and 8.64%, which is the largest single step recorded on this platform, and it comes with only 0.39 in of additional width.

Height without width is a favourable trade on a midsize truck, where the constraint usually arrives at the inner edge of the front tire rather than at the top of the arch. At 8.64% an indicated 70 mph is 76.1 and 100 odometer miles is 108.6 actually covered.

The narrow 33

33x10.50R17 measures 33.00 in on a 10.50 in section — barely wider than the factory 265, which is 10.43 in.

  • From 265/70R17: +1.39 in, 4.41%, and +0.07 in of width.
  • From 255/70R17: +1.94 in, 6.26%.
  • From 265/60R18: +2.48 in, 8.13%.

That first row is close to a free change in every dimension except height: a nominal 33 that adds less than a tenth of an inch across the widest point of the casing. It is the reason narrow flotation sizes persist on trucks this size while full-size pickups moved to 12.50-wide tires.

285/70R17 at 32.71 in is the wider option: +1.10 in from 265/70R17 with 0.79 in more width.

Axle ratios are not recorded

The ratio column is empty for this generation. On a truck this recent that is a gap likely to close rather than a permanent one, and the tempting shortcut — carrying the previous generation's figure across because the model name did not change — is exactly the move that would make this page confidently wrong.

Every figure above is geometry and needs no ratio. For the engine-speed question, the gear ratio calculator will take yours directly, along with the two sizes.

One gap in the wheel record

A 16-inch factory wheel diameter is recorded for this platform with no 16-inch tire size confirmed against it. What could be sourced is listed above; what could not is left out rather than guessed at, because a guess would print with exactly the same authority as the three confirmed sizes.

Sidewall, and where it went

Reading the three factory sizes by sidewall rather than diameter makes the trim differences clearer: 7.30 in on 265/70R17, 7.03 in on 255/70R17, and 6.26 in on 265/60R18.

The 18-inch fitment gives up more than an inch of sidewall against the taller 17-inch one, and gets nothing back in rolling diameter — it is shorter as well. What it buys is the appearance of the larger wheel and slightly more responsive steering, and what it costs is the cushion between the rim flange and whatever the tire hits.

That is the main reason owners of the 18-inch trim so often end up on 275/70R18: it restores the sidewall to 7.58 in, more than any factory fitment on the platform, without changing the wheel.

What geometry cannot decide

Whether any of these clears your truck. Wheel offset, suspension, trim-specific bodywork and steering travel decide contact, and the arithmetic has no access to any of them. The off-road trim of this generation leaves the factory on a taller tire and wider track than the base truck, so even "a Frontier" is two different amounts of room depending on which one is in front of you.

Where these figures come from

Manufacturer's published specifications for the model year range shown, cross-checked against the size printed on the vehicle's tire and loading information placard.

Your vehicle's own tire and loading information placard — the sticker on the driver's door jamb — is the authoritative record of what left the factory on your specific vehicle, including the inflation pressures its speedometer and load ratings were set against. Read that before you trust any table, including this one.
