Ten platforms out of the factory, three more as a step up
No other size in this catalogue is factory-fitted to as many platforms. 265/70R17 is recorded as a factory fitment on the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth generation Ford F-150, the fourth-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the Ram 1500 DS, the Ram 2500, the fifth-generation Chevrolet Tahoe, the fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner, the Nissan Frontier D41 and the fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma.
It is also listed as a common upgrade on three vehicles that do not come with it: the North American Ford Ranger, the second-generation Chevrolet Colorado and the Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2. Every factory size on those three falls between 30.05 and 30.56 in, so reaching 265/70R17 is a step of somewhere between one inch and an inch and a half for them, and no step at all for everyone else.
The same three numbers under a Ram 2500 and a Grand Cherokee
Read the fitment list again and the range is remarkable. A three-quarter-ton pickup and a unibody SUV are recorded with the same size code — and on the Ram 2500 the record reads LT265/70R17, with the service-type prefix that the Grand Cherokee's does not carry.
Two of the ten factory records — the thirteenth-generation F-150 and the fourth-generation Tacoma — carry both forms of the code at once, plain and LT, on the same vehicle across different trims.
Nothing about the shape differs. Both are 265 mm nominal section width, both are 70% aspect, both sit on a 17-inch wheel, and both compute to 31.61 in. What differs is everything the code does not describe: casing construction, reference inflation, and the load index stamped after it. Those are the properties that decide what a tire can carry, and none of them can be read off a size code. The load range and ply rating reference covers the markings; the vehicle's own placard states the minimum it was certified with.
What barely counts as a change
Three catalogued sizes sit inside half an inch of this one:
- 245/75R17, 31.47 in — 0.14 in shorter, 0.79 in narrower, a 0.44% difference in diameter.
- 32x11.50R17, 32.00 in — 0.39 in taller and 1.07 in wider, at 1.25%.
- 255/75R17, 32.06 in — 0.45 in taller and, unusually, 0.39 in narrower.
None of those three moves a speedometer by more than half a mile per hour at highway speed. All three look materially different on the vehicle, because their section widths run from 9.65 in to 11.50 in. This is the recurring lesson of the 17-inch band: the numbers that change the arithmetic and the numbers that change the appearance are not the same numbers.

Two symmetries are worth noticing. Dropping the aspect ratio by five points costs 1.04 in and raising it by five gains the same 1.04 in, because aspect ratio is a percentage of a section width that is not changing. And moving the section width by 10 mm at a fixed 70 aspect moves the diameter by 0.55 in — half as much, because 10 mm of width only becomes 7 mm of sidewall, doubled.
Why so many comparisons begin here
When a reader asks how much taller some other tire is, the tire they are leaving is very often this one, simply because so many vehicles arrive on it. That is also why it is worth knowing that 31.61 in is not a round number and that the size is not "a 32" in any meaningful sense: it is 0.39 in short of one, and the flotation size that genuinely is a 32 is more than an inch wider.
What the driveline is left with
Because this size is where so many changes begin, it is also the starting point for the gearing arithmetic — and that arithmetic scales the axle ratio by the two revolutions-per-mile figures, 638.1 here against whatever is fitted.
Take the F-150's four recorded ratios and the single most common step from this size, to 285/70R17. A 3.15 axle ends up behaving like 3.04. A 3.55 behaves like 3.43. A 3.73 behaves like 3.60. Step instead to 33x12.50R17 on the 3.55 and the figure is 3.40.
Going the other way is just as real and gets discussed far less: dropping to 255/70R17 on a 3.55 axle produces the behaviour of a 3.61, because a shorter tire shortens the gearing exactly as a numerically higher ratio would.
None of those figures says anything about whether a vehicle needs a ratio change. They say what number the driveline is now working with, which is the part a size code hides.
