A 33 on a 15-inch wheel and a 33 on a 20-inch wheel are the same height and almost nothing else. That is the substance of this comparison, and it is more interesting than the inch of extra diameter.

The starting point is not a 32

275/55R20 computes to 31.91 in. Trucks delivered on it are calibrated around a tire just under 32 inches tall, which is worth stating because the size is frequently described as "a 32" and then compared with a 33 as though the gap were a full inch. It is 1.09 in — close, but the rounding happens in the wrong direction to be a coincidence.

Against that, 33x12.50R20 is 33.00 in exactly, because flotation notation puts the diameter in the name.

The sidewall ladder

Here is what happens to a nominal 33 as the wheel underneath it grows:

That is the single most useful thing to know before buying a 33 for a 20-inch wheel: you are buying the height and very little of the compliance that the name usually implies.

The change the truck sees

3.42%, worth about 2.4 mph at motorway pace. That is the awkward middle of the range: well outside instrument noise, and well inside the point at which anything in the driveline is unhappy about it. Most owners account for it mentally and move on.

The half inch the axle gains is not what anyone bought the tire for either, and on a truck this size it is invisible parked next to an unmodified one.

Width is the bigger proportional change

10.83 in becomes 12.50 in: 1.67 in, or 15.45%. On a half-ton that is the dimension the wheel-arch liner and the front lower control arm care about, and it arrives regardless of what the ride height does. Wheel offset decides which side of the hub it lands on, and the factory 20-inch wheels these trucks come with were not chosen with a 12.50 section in mind.

Why the swap happens at all

275/55R20 exists almost entirely as an original-equipment size. It was specified for half-tons delivered on 20-inch wheels, it is made mostly in highway and light all-terrain patterns, and the aftermarket has very little reason to develop anything aggressive in it. The moment an owner wants a different kind of tread on the same wheels, the realistic options are all flotation sizes — and 33x12.50R20 is the smallest of them.

So this comparison is frequently not a decision about height at all. It is what the arithmetic looks like after the tread has already been chosen.

Two trucks, one question

This pairing is asked on F-150s and on Ram 1500s in almost identical terms, because both are sold in volume on 20-inch wheels with 275/55R20 and both have a well-supported aftermarket selling 33s for them. The trucks differ in suspension design and in how much room sits behind the front wheel; the tires do not know that.

The metric size that lands on the same spot

There is a metric alternative worth seeing before deciding: 275/60R20 against the same 33x12.50R20 — and the result there is close to a dead heat on height, with the whole difference in width. If your reason for wanting a 33 is the ride height rather than the stance, that page is the one that matters.

What is left over

Load rating and the wheel itself. Going from 10.83 in of nominal section to 12.50 in is 1.67 in of extra casing to support, and the range of wheel widths a flotation tire of that size is approved for lives on its data sheet rather than in its name — this site has no rim-width figures for any size, so what your wheels would make of it is a check to run rather than a number to read here.
