The half-ton twenty
275/55R20 appears in the factory records of the second-generation Toyota Tundra, the twelfth and thirteenth generation Ford F-150, the third-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the Ram 1500 DT. Those five cover a fifteen-year span of North American half-ton production, and between them they are the reason a 20-inch wheel stopped being an aftermarket statement and became a trim level.
Where the height actually is
Twenty of this tire's 31.91 inches are wheel. The remaining height is split between two sidewalls of 5.95 in each, and that is what a 55-series aspect ratio means once it is applied to a casing this wide: a tall-sounding percentage of a big number that still lands under six inches.
For scale, a 265/70R16 stands 30.61 in — nearly an inch and a third shorter — and carries 7.30 in of sidewall. The smaller tire has more air in it, because the wheel it wraps is four inches smaller in diameter. Nothing about the arithmetic on this page changes as a result. Diameter is the only quantity that reaches the speedometer, the odometer or the gearing, and 31.91 in is 31.91 in regardless of how it is composed.
Two upgrades that are the same size and not the same tire

Both make an indicated 70 mph an actual 72.4 mph. Both put an odometer showing 100 miles at 103.4. Every figure this site computes says they are interchangeable, and they are 1.67 in apart in section width — which is the entire difference between a taller factory-shaped tire and a noticeably wider aftermarket one.
If the goal is height, the two are equivalent. If the goal is stance or contact patch, they are not remotely equivalent, and no number on this page distinguishes them. Read that as a limit of the arithmetic rather than a verdict on either tire.

Below the 50-series band on a 20-inch wheel, the catalogue jumps straight to the 35-series performance sizes and the drop becomes severe. There is no gentle downward path from this size, because the aspect ratios that would provide one are not produced in truck widths on this wheel.
Above and beside it, in width rather than height
Two sizes go wider without going much taller: 305/55R20 at 33.21 in adds 1.18 in of section width for 1.30 in of height, and 285/60R20 at 33.46 in adds 0.39 in of width for 1.56 in of height. The first is the wider option, the second the taller one, and their diameters are within a quarter of an inch of each other.
What the Ram 1500 DT's option sheet looks like in inches
The DT is recorded with three factory tire sizes on three different wheels: 275/65R18 at 32.07 in, this size at 31.91 in, and 285/45R22 at 32.10 in. The spread across all three is under two tenths of an inch.
That is not a coincidence and it is not generosity. A manufacturer that let rolling diameter drift across its own wheel options would need a different speedometer calibration, a different tachometer relationship at a given road speed, and a different set of stability-control constants for each one. Holding the diameter and varying the aspect ratio is the cheap way to sell four different-looking trucks with one drivetrain calibration.
The column that same option sheet does not advertise
Read those three codes again by sidewall rather than by diameter and they stop looking alike. 275/65R18 carries 7.04 in. This size carries 5.95 in. 285/45R22 carries 5.05 in.
That is a two-inch spread across options a buyer chooses between on appearance and price, on trucks whose rolling diameters agree to within 0.19 in. The 22-inch tire has barely seventy per cent of the casing depth the 18-inch tire has, and the only figure on the window sticker that moves is the wheel diameter.
Add the fourth code the same market uses — 275/50R22 at 32.83 in and 5.41 in of sidewall — and the pattern holds across four wheel sizes. Rolling diameter is engineered to stay still. Sidewall is what is actually being sold, in both directions, and it is the dimension none of the arithmetic here can rank for you.
