Almost every compact crossover of the last decade has been delivered on this size in at least one trim level: RAV4, CR-V, Rogue, Tucson, Sportage, Forester, Equinox. It is the size that replaced the light-truck fitments those vehicles inherited on paper but never needed in practice, and it is where a great deal of ordinary tire-buying volume now sits.

The half-inch that separates two trim levels

The size fitted to the trim above this one, on most of the same vehicles, is 235/60R17. It measures 28.10 in — 0.41 in shorter, 1.45% down, and 0.39 in wider at the section. The sidewall drops from 5.76 in to 5.55 in.

That is a genuinely small change in rolling diameter for what is marketed as a meaningful difference in wheel-and-tire package. At 1.45%, an indicated 70 mph would read 69.0 mph on a vehicle calibrated for the taller size. The change a buyer actually gets is 0.39 in of extra footprint width and slightly less sidewall — appearance and steering feel, not gearing.

Going the other way, 235/65R17 is 0.51 in taller at 29.03 in and 1.79% up. That is the same 10 mm width step, at the same aspect ratio, in the opposite direction from 225 mm — and it moves the diameter more than the trim-level change does.

Aspect ratio is the bigger lever here

Why the crossover class stopped at 65-series

A 5.76 in sidewall is close to the practical ceiling for a car-derived platform: enough compliance to absorb broken pavement, short enough that the tire does not squirm under a tall body. Below this, the ride stiffens noticeably; above it, the vehicle would need arch clearance it does not have. Sixty-five on a 17-inch wheel produced roughly 28.5 in of diameter, which happens to be very close to what the same class of vehicle used to achieve on 16-inch wheels with taller sidewalls.

What the same vehicle wears on an 18-inch wheel

The higher trims of most of these crossovers move to 235/60R18, and that is not a diameter-neutral change: it measures 29.10 in, which is 0.59 in and 2.06% above this size. A vehicle calibrated for 225/65R17 and fitted with 235/60R18 would show an indicated 70 mph while travelling at 71.4 mph.

The reason it is not neutral is that the manufacturer did not need it to be. Speedometer calibration is per-variant, and a trim level that ships on 18-inch wheels was calibrated for them from the start. It only becomes an arithmetic problem when someone moves between the two afterwards, which is what the speedometer error calculator is for.

Load capacity in a size sold to two markets

The class-level load index range on the panel above is a range for a reason. This code is stocked both as an ordinary passenger tire and in constructions aimed at heavier crossovers, and the load index printed after the size differs accordingly. Two tires marked 225/65R17 are not necessarily rated to carry the same weight.

A note on the revolutions figure

At 707.3 revolutions per mile, this size sits between the passenger and light-truck bands. The figure is geometric — derived from the circumference of a nominal casing at zero deflection. Manufacturers publish measured revolutions-per-mile figures instead, taken from a loaded tire at speed, and those typically run a few per cent higher because a loaded tire's rolling radius is smaller than its free radius. Both numbers are correct; they measure different things, and the revolutions per mile reference sets out which to use when.
