One size, five platforms, four badges

The vehicle records on this site list 265/65R17 as a stock fitment on the second and third generation Toyota Tacoma, the North American Ford Ranger, the second-generation Chevrolet Colorado, and the Nissan Frontier D40. That is four nameplates and five platforms spanning model years from 2005 to the present, and it is an unusually clean convergence: mid-size pickups have very similar track widths, wheel wells and payload targets, and they end up specifying very similar tires.

The whole set spans less than two tenths of an inch. All four have identical section width, because section width is the first number and nothing else in the code touches it. What changes across the four is how much of that height is air and how much is wheel: 7.30 in of sidewall at the top of the table, 5.22 in at the bottom.

The first of those keeps the section width exactly where it is, at 10.43 in, and buys the height from five aspect points. The second buys 1.07 in of extra width along with the height. The third is the odd one: a flotation 33 whose 10.50 in of section width is within 0.07 in of the tire it replaces, so it adds nearly two and a half inches of diameter and essentially no width. Those three routes to a bigger tire are not variations on one decision.

Downward, the nearest catalogued size is 255/65R17 at 30.05 in, which is 0.51 in shorter and 0.39 in narrower. That is a 1.67% reduction, small enough that a speedometer reads about a mile per hour high at highway speed and an odometer over-counts by less than two miles in a hundred.

Why this size is filed under crossover rather than light truck

The class band shown above the prose puts 265/65R17 with the crossover sizes, not the light-truck ones, and that reflects how it is actually built and sold: predominantly as a P-metric-style casing at passenger reference inflation, in load indexes that suit an unladen mid-size pickup rather than a work truck. Light-truck construction in this size exists and carries a different number after the code.
