The busiest 18-inch size on the list

Eight factory records name 275/65R18, and the panel above lists them. What matters is their range: three consecutive generations of one half-ton nameplate, two more half-tons from a rival group, a full-size import, and — at the far end — a three-quarter-ton Super Duty. No other size on an 18-inch wheel in this catalogue is fitted so widely, and only 265/70R17 beats it on any wheel.

Five of those eight records carry a prefix

Look at how the code is written on each vehicle and the list splits. The Silverado, the Sierra and the F-250 list it only as LT275/65R18. The fourteenth-generation F-150 and the Ram 1500 DT list both forms, plain and prefixed, across different configurations of the same truck. The Tundra and the two older F-150s list it plain.

The F-250's record is the one worth pausing on: every one of its four factory sizes carries the prefix — LT245/75R17, LT275/65R18, LT275/70R18 and LT285/60R20. That is what a heavy-duty specification looks like in a size list, and none of it is visible in the three numbers this page is about.

The size it is two hundredths of an inch away from

255/70R18 measures 32.06 in. Against this size that is 0.02 in, or 0.06% — as close as two different codes get anywhere on an 18-inch wheel.

They are 0.79 in apart in section width, and both are factory fitments: 255/70R18 appears on the Wrangler JL, the Gladiator, the Tundra and the Defender, while 275/65R18 sits under the half-tons listed above. Two families of vehicle arrived at the same rolling diameter from different directions, one by carrying the height in aspect ratio and the other in width.

The symmetry around the middle is exact. Ten millimetres of section width at 65 aspect is 0.51 in of diameter in either direction, so 265/65R18 and 285/65R18 sit the same distance below and above. Five aspect points on a 275 is 1.08 in, which is what separates this size from 275/70R18.

One wheel diameter, two classes of truck

The bottom row of that table is worth a second look. 265/60R18 is a factory size on the third- generation Tacoma, the Ranger, the Colorado and the Frontier D41 — four mid-size pickups. It sits 1.56 in below a size that comes on an F-250.

So the 18-inch wheel is where the mid-size and heavy-duty ends of the market overlap, and the entire distance between them is under an inch and two thirds of tire diameter. Almost everything else that differs between those trucks — axle capacity, brake size, frame section, what the casing is built to hold — is invisible to a size code.

Where it stops being a rounding error

At 2.88% — the flotation 33 — an indicated 70 mph is an actual 72.0 mph and 100 indicated miles is 102.9. At 5.09%, 285/70R18, the same readings become 73.6 mph and 105.1 miles. Those are the two points on this wheel where the instrument cluster starts telling a story that is meaningfully different from the road.

Five wheels arrive at this height

Thirty-two inches turns out to be a diameter the industry reaches from almost anywhere. 32x11.50R15 is 32.00 in. 255/75R17 and 32x11.50R17 are 32.06 in and 32.00 in. 255/65R19 is 32.05 in. 285/45R22 is 32.10 in. Every one of those is within a tenth of an inch of this size, and they span eight inches of wheel diameter.

What separates them is the sidewall. This size carries 7.04 in of it. The 15-inch code carries 8.50 in; the 22-inch code carries 5.05 in. Fit any of them and the speedometer, the odometer and the engine speed at a given road speed stay where they were, because none of those quantities knows how the height was divided between rubber and metal.

That is the honest summary of the plus-sizing argument on this height: the arithmetic on this page is blind to the wheel, and every difference the buyer is actually paying for lives in the column the arithmetic cannot see.
