Six upgrade lists, zero factory fitments
Six vehicle records name 285/65R20 as a common upgrade — five full-size pickups and one full-size SUV, all listed in the panel above. It appears in nobody's factory list.
Five of the six write it as LT285/65R20; the SUV's record writes it plain. The prefix is a statement about how the casing is built and rated, and it leaves every dimension on this page untouched.
Reached by aspect ratio, not by switching notation
The interesting thing about this size is the route to it. Every one of those six trucks also has a 285-wide option lower down — 285/60R20 at 33.46 in appears as factory equipment on the F-250 and Ram 2500 and as an upgrade on the third-generation Silverado.
Going from 285/60R20 to 285/65R20 is five aspect points on an unchanged casing: +1.12 in of diameter, which is 0.56 in of extra sidewall on each side and no change in section width at all. That is a genuinely different kind of move from swapping to a flotation code, which changes the width by more than an inch as a side effect of changing the height.
Where it lands relative to the 33 and the 35

It is not halfway between the 33 and the 35. It is four-fifths of the way to the 35, and 1.28 in narrower than either flotation size. Swapping it for a 35x12.50R20 moves an indicated 70 mph to an actual 70.8 mph, which is inside the error band of most speedometers to begin with.
The fifth row is the one that surprises people. 295/65R20 measures 35.10 in — taller than an actual 35 — while still being 0.89 in narrower than one. A metric size can pass a flotation size in height without ever approaching it in width.
The same upgrade is a different size of step on each truck
Because the six platforms leave the factory on different 20-inch tires, reaching this size costs them different amounts.
- From 275/60R20 — the fourteenth-generation F-150, both GM half-tons and the Tahoe — it is +1.59 in and 4.83%. An indicated 70 mph becomes an actual 73.4 mph.
- From 275/55R20 — the thirteenth-generation F-150 and the Ram 1500 DT — it is +2.68 in and 8.39%, and an indicated 70 mph becomes 75.9 mph.
- From the Tahoe's 22-inch 275/50R22, it is +1.76 in and 5.36%.
The same three-number upgrade, requested on two model years of the same truck, produces speedometer errors nearly two and a half miles per hour apart at the same indicated speed. What matters is never the tire being fitted on its own; it is the pair.
The same width on an 18-inch wheel
285/75R18 stands 34.83 in, which is 0.24 in above this size, on identical section width. The two are the 285 family's top rungs on adjacent wheel diameters, and they differ in sidewall: 8.42 in on the 18, against 7.29 in here.
That extra inch and an eighth of sidewall on each side is most of what separates them, and it is invisible to every calculation on this page. Diameter, revolutions per mile, speedometer error and gearing all treat 34.59 in and 34.83 in as nearly the same tire.
Past 35 inches on a 20
Going further on a 20-inch wheel means 325/60R20 at 35.35 in (+0.77 in, and 1.57 in wider), 37x12.50R20 at 37.00 in (+2.41 in, 6.98%) or 38x13.50R20 at 38.00 in (+3.41 in, 9.87%). At the last of those, an indicated 70 mph is an actual 76.9 mph and a hundred indicated miles is 109.9.
What the axle is left doing
A taller tire acts on the driveline like a numerically lower axle ratio, and the size of that effect is fixed by the two revolutions-per-mile figures — 611.3 for a factory 275/60R20 against 583.1 here.
Run the three ratios these trucks are recorded with through that scaling and the picture is concrete. A 3.23 axle behaves like 3.08. A 3.55 behaves like 3.39. A 3.73 behaves like 3.56 — which is to say it ends up almost exactly where the 3.55 truck started. From the Ram 1500 DT's shorter 275/55R20 and its tallest 3.92 option, the result is 3.62.
Every one of those is arithmetic on two numbers, not a claim about how any particular truck will behave. Transmission programming, converter behaviour and how the vehicle is loaded all sit between that figure and anything a driver notices.
