195/65R15 vs 225/45R17 — three wheel sizes, one hundredth of an inch

The full plus-two on a Golf, and the tidiest result in the whole comparison set.

Drawn to scale from the size codes. Solid outline is 195/65R15; dashed outline is 225/45R17. The bars below each tire are section width at the same scale.

225/45R17 is 0.01 in shorter than 195/65R15 (0.03%) and 1.18 in wider. A speedometer calibrated for 195/65R15 would over-read by 0.03%.

Two inches of wheel. Thirty millimetres of width. Twenty points of aspect ratio. Net change in rolling diameter: 0.01 in.

Exactly one inch of sidewall, traded away

  • 195/65R15 — 4.99 in of sidewall, 24.98 in overall
  • 225/45R17 — 3.99 in of sidewall, 24.97 in overall

The sidewall gives up 1.00 in, the wheel takes 1.00 in at the top and 1.00 in at the bottom, and the books balance. It is rare for the arithmetic to land this cleanly, and it is the reason these two sizes sit at opposite ends of the same trim ladder on so many cars.

The width is the only real change

7.68 in becomes 8.86 in — 1.18 in more section width, 15.38%. That is a substantial change in the space the tire occupies and in what it does under cornering load, and it is the entire content of the swap once the diameter has been shown not to move.

What this means for a Mk7 Golf

The car was sold across this whole span, from base trims on 15-inch wheels to sportier ones on 17s, with the same speedometer and the same gearing. A used buyer looking at two examples with different wheels is looking at two cars that will read the same speed and record the same mileage. The difference is in ride and in the cost of replacing a wheel, not in anything the instruments measure.

The step that breaks the pattern

Go one further, to an 18-inch wheel on a 40-series, and the diameter finally starts moving — 205/55R16 against 225/40R18 puts numbers on where the ladder stops behaving. The plus-sizing reference explains the method these three sizes were built to satisfy.

The figure that is not preserved

Sidewall height, obviously, and with it the amount of impact the tire can absorb before the rim is involved. Twenty points of aspect ratio is a fifth of the tire's proportion, and on a 15-inch wheel that fifth is a full inch of rubber. Everything the arithmetic says is preserved genuinely is preserved; everything it does not mention has changed a great deal.
